Identifying risks

Safety advisors in an industrial environment
Each municipality and province maps the risks in its territory. Based on this analysis, they take appropriate measures, impose safety standards or develop emergency plans.

How does this work?

To identify risks, experts try to answer the following questions:

  1. What risks are there in our territory? Which risks are given priority?
  2. What is the probability of a risk occurring? What is the impact of each risk? How do the different risks relate to each other?
  3. How can we better manage these risks? What measures, standards or emergency plans already exist? What additional measures, standards or emergency plans do we need?

What are the risks in Belgium?

Since 2018, the National Crisis Center has coordinated the identification of risks at the national level.

The purpose of this national risk analysis is to identify and evaluate, in a structured and scientifically correct manner, the major risks to which Belgium may be exposed.
